Swedish Foreign Minister Rejects Karadzic’s Claims of US Deal

The Swedish Foreign Minister has rejected claims from the former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic that the USA had promised to dismiss the war crime indictment against him if he were to voluntarily withdraw his leadership.

Minister Carl Bildt was a mediator during the war in the Balkans in the 1990s. He says Karadzic was not arrested back then because the US did not want to risk their soldiers lives.

They were cautious after the mission to arrest a warlord in Somalia in 1993 went wrong and resulted in 18 US soldiers loosing their lives.

Karadzic is currently on trial for eleven counts of genocide and crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague for crimes during the war in Yugoslavia in the 1990s.
