Government Shuts Unions out in the Cold

The Swedish Prime Minister has snubbed the main Swedish unions, saying he’s not planning to hold any specific negotiations with them.

In recent Swedish political tradition the big LO and TCO unions have been seen as important partners for the government, as they organise a majority of the working population, LO alone having 1.7 million members.

But Prime Minister Reinfeldt says he prefers to meet with ordinary workers, not the leaders, and that criticisms on this issue from the Social Democrats are motivated by their close cooperation with the LO union.
