Politicians To Advertise on TV

The Christian Democrats are to be the first Swedish political party to broadcast political advertisements on TV. TV ads for political parties were banned in Sweden until recently, but when Sweden went over to digital tv the ban was lifted.

Christian Democrat leader Göran Hägglund says the lack of interest in the upcoming European Elections means that parties have to do all they can to get people to vote, including buying adverts on TV.

Other political parties have been more sceptical to the idea, with the Greens trying to get the other parties to agree to a voluntary ban on TV ads. The Christian Democrats, however, have decided to take the step as long as certain ethical guidelines are adopted, including:

  • The adverts should be truthful
  • The adverts shouldn’t be negative, or play on voter’s fears
  • It should be clear which party is behind the advert.
