Turkey Seeks Swedish Support for EU-Accession

During a visit in Stockholm Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has called on the EU not to make his country’s application to join the 27-member bloc a ”domestic issue”. Davutoglu was in Stockholm for talks with his Swedish counterpart Carl Bildt and EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn.

Turkey’s foreign minister said joining the EU was ”a strategic priority” for Turkey and the only objective of its negotiations was ”full membership”. Sweden’s Foreign Minister Carl Bildt has previously said Germany’s and France’s reluctant position on Turkish EU membership differs from ”the vast majority of countries” who support Ankara joining.
