Hammarby Relegated

One of the big Stockholm clubs have been relegated from the top flight of Swedish football.

Hammarby, seen as the working class club from the south of the city, went down 4-2 at Trelleborg on Wednesday to seal their fate with one match still remaining. "Bajen" have had a disastrous season , losing 19 times, and even a change in coach in mid-season failed to stem the run of defeats.

Another Stockholm club could be joining them in the Superettan next season but at least rivals Djurgården have given themselves a chance by leaping into the relegation play-off decider place above Örgryte after a recent run of form which on Wednesday saw them beat Helsingborg 2-0 .

If both go down, at least they can take comfort from the fact that another Stockholm team, AIK, suffered the same fate in recent times and now could win the top flight title on Sunday. AIK drew their final home game of the season 1-1 against Örebro on Wednesday night, leaving them a point ahead of IFK Gothenburg, and needing just a draw, against IFK in Gothenburg in a title decider at the weekend.
