Being At Work When Sick Costs

Going to work when you are sick could be bad for your health, according to a new Swedish report.

Researchers at the Karolinska Institute, and the Stockholm and Uppsala Universities looked at 10000 workers in the public and private sectors, and found that those who went to work even though they were sick ran a higher risk of being forced into long-term sick leave in the future.

27% of those working in the public sector and who had been at work sick more than 5 times in a year ended up having more than 30 days off because of illness three years later. Only 12% of those that had stayed at home to get better were off for a long period of time later on, according to the newspaper Uppsala Nya Tidning.
