On Wednesday a major Swedish trade delegation is on its way to China, as part of a royal visit by King Carl Gustaf. But, Swedish Radio News reports, the most obvious participant isn’t coming along.
Volvo Cars is currently being sold by Ford to China’s Geely. As such, it’s the Swedish-based company with the strongest Chinese connection. But Volvo’s outgoing CEO Stephen Odell is reportedly phasing himself out of the company and probably going back to Ford. So he has declined to take part in the China delegation.
Volvo has suggested sending a lower level executive, but this has reportedly caused diplomatic ripples as a violation of royal visit protocol and Chinese etiquette.
