Demand for Repayment of Student Loans

CSN, the government agency which administers student loans in Sweden, has come under fire for demanding repayment for students who are correctly following their school’s course requirements.

According to Swedish Radio News thousands of students face police complaints. The problem comes because the schedules at some schools, like Stockholm’s Royal Institute of Technology, can have students taking 20 units in the Fall and 40 in the Spring. But if CSN doesn’t see a student finishing 30 units every semester, they automatically assume that student is cheating.

Peter Gudmundson, Chancellor of the Royal Institute of Technology has issued an open letter to the head of CSN saying it is unacceptable for the agency to try to control a school’s schedule. The Minister for Higher Education says there’s nothing he can do about it, it’s a problem for CSN and the universities to work out.
