Sweden’s new ambassador to Afghanistan Torbjörn Pettersson is very critical of the Migration Minister’s proposal to build orphanages in Afghanistan to house refugee children arriving here unaccompanied by adults.
The plan is that they could be reunited with their parents in Afghanistan, but in an interview with Swedish Radio News Pettersson says he doesn’t believe that would happen. He says the reason people are fleeing Afghanistan is because the national government cannot provide security for the population. And he doesn’t believe that security could be guaranteed to protect the planned orphanages.
Before his appointment as ambassador, Pettersson headed the Swedish Afghanistan Committee, an NGO closely involved in development projects in Afghanistan.
