Sweden takes gold in junior hockey championships

Småkronorna “The Little Crowns” defeated Russia, the defending champion, 1-0 in the 36th World Junior Ice Hockey Championships (WJHC) last night in Calgary, Canada, bringing home the first WJHC gold for Sweden in 31 years. The last time Sweden won was in 1981.

Eighteen-year-old Mika Zibanejad, who plays for the Djurgården team in Sweden’s elite hockey series, scored the game’s only goal 10 minutes into overtime, Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet reports online.

“You have to experience this to know what it feels like,” Zibanejad said after the match.

The WJHC began on December 26, 2011, and ended with the gold medal game on January 5, 2012.
