Parents protest halal school meals

A protest movement has emerged in skånska Svedala, southern Sweden after school pupils' parents objected to the municipality serving halal chicken at schools for the past four years, Swedish Radio's local station Malmöhus reported.

The issue has been debated in the municipal council and parents have complained to the Swedish Schools Inspectorate (Skolinspektionen).

"We have worked nearly day and night...We will win, we will get through this," said one mother who is a member of a Facebook group called Us who are against our children being served halal meat at school.

Parents told Swedish Radio that they have received threats after getting involved in the campaign. They claimed that serving halal meat goes against the school law's requirement that meals be nondenominational.
