Stockholm county is the first local area in the world to try a text message based system with CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) educated volunteers who receiving texts to their mobile phones when someone has suffered cardiac arrest in their vicinity. And the latest data shows that in half of the cases volunteers are on the spot before the ambulance arrives. This has lead to fewer deaths from cardiac arrest in the county, especially in downtown Stockholm.

Over 9,600 people have given out their mobile phone numbers, work address and home address and signed on as volunteers. Mårten Rosenqvist, professor in cardiology and spokesperson for Stockholm's Cardiac Arrest Group, explains how it works.
