384 Swedes Confirmed Dead in Tsunami
The Swedish police now say 384 Swedes are confirmed as having died in December’s Indian Ocean tsunami disaster.
That’s 10 more than the figure released a week ago.
The total number of those killed or missing remains at 544.
As many as 20,000 Swedes were vacationing in the area at the time, and Sweden remains one of the countries outside the area with the highest per capital death toll. More than 217,000 people are believed to have died in the disaster.
Following a new earthquake in the region at the end of last month, the Swedish government has decided to send more support to the United Nations disaster relief efforts in Indonesia.
The UN has asked that the Swedish Rescue Services’ begin operations on the island of Nias, and for more personnel and equipment to be sent to the relief base camp at Meuloaboh.
The March 28th quake measured 8.7 on the Richter scale.
