Swedish Ping Pong Great Retires
Swedish table tennis great Jan-Ove Waldner has announced his retirement from international competition, drawing the curtain on a 19 year career.
The former Olympic and world champion made his announcement Tuesday just before losing in straight sets in the third round of the world championships in Shanghai.
Sweden battled China for ping pong dominance from the late 80’s into the 90’s and through-out his career Waldner was often the main European rival to China’s string of world champions.
His career highlights were winning the men’s singles title at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and the world championships in Manchester in 1997.
