Persson Criticises EU Farm Policies

Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson is chairing a special meeting of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development in Paris.

Speaking before the first session Tuesday, the Swedish Prime Minister said rich nations are undermining efforts to alleviate global poverty by doling out huge subsidies to their own farmers and maintaining trade barriers. Persson particularly attacked the European Union’s farm policy.

On Wednesday the ministers repeated a pledge to a significant increase in aid to developing countries but took no action on debt cancellation.
