Many drownings during warm weather

With the warm weather over the weekend, there were many people out swimming in Swedish lakes and seas and at least seven people died over the past five days.

Several of the victims were children, which is unusual in Sweden, because the number of children drowning has been cut by half over recent years. One explanation may be because in 2007 learning how to swim was introduced into Swedish school curriculum.

At the same time as child drownings decreased, adult drownings increased in Sweden over the past five years. A reason for this could be adults who overestimate their swimming skills. Men, being more risk-prone, are represented more in accident statistics, Swedish Radio News reports.
