Too easy to fake Swedish ID cards

The Swedish Police and the Swedish Bankers’ Association are calling for new requirements for ID cards here, Swedish Television News reports. They say it is too easy to fake a Swedish ID card

During the first half of this year, the number of frauds committed in Sweden increased by 9 percent compared to the same period last year.

“This is really not good,” Jan Olsson of the police’s National Fraud Center tells SVT News, “and unfortunately half of these crimes were committed with the help of fake ID cards.”

The Bankers’ Association is proposing that applicants for ID cards must apply in person, as is already the case for passports. It also wants to reduce the number of agencies allowed to issue official Swedish ID cards, from the 15 that do so today.
