At the opening, King Carl XVI Gustaf called upon parliamentarians to tackle the problems of future with respect for one another's differing political opinions.
He also called for representatives to keep in mind the wants and needs of all Swedes.
"Our country has over 10 million inhabitants with varying backgrounds and experiences and different dreams about the future," the king said in Parliament. "About one fifths are children and young people. Almost as many have been born in another country and immigrated here. All of these individuals together form Sweden. These are the ones you represent in Parliament's chamber."
Parliament is currently made up of 8 different political parties and has 349 seats. It also celebrates its 400th anniversary of opening this year.
