Submarine killer's lifetime sentence upheld

Peter Madsen, the Danish self-taught submarine designer, who was convicted of murdering Swedish journalist Kim Wall, has lost an appeal against his lifetime sentence.

Madsen wanted a time-limited sentence, not an open-ended prison term. After Wednesday's hearing, Madsen's lawyer said she was surprised by the ruling, but was not sure whether her client will try to appeal it.

It is unusual in Denmark to be sentenced to life for a single murder if the accused has no previous convictions. In Denmark, a life sentence is on average 16 years but can be extended if necessary.
