Scientists demand research into sperm quality

The sperm count among men in the West is decreasing dramatically, according to andrologists from around the world who have joined forces to push for more research into the negative trend.

The scientists, from countries like Sweden, Japan and the US, have written a petition demanding that governments and medical communities "acknowledge the importance of male reproductive health for the survival of the human and other species".

One of the signatories is Professor Stefan Arver, director of andrology, sexual medicine, and transmedicine at Stockholm's Karolinska University Hospital.

Arver tells Radio Sweden that there are strong indications that both the quality and quantity of sperm is worsening.
