The Nobel Peace Prize for 2018 has been awarded for "efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict."

The Norwegian Nobel Committee chose Nadia Murad and Denis Mukwege.

Nadia Murad has witnessed of the rape and abuse perpetrated against her and 3,000 Yazidi women in Iraq by the terrorist group IS.

Denis Mukwege has long worked to help victims of rape in the wars in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and spoken out against the lack of action by the DRC government and other countries.

The prize will be formally awarded in Oslo on the 10th of December.

The peace prize is the only Nobel award handed out in Oslo, with all others here in Stockholm. When the Swedish inventor of dynamite Alfred Nobel created his famous awards, Sweden and Norway were joined in a union.
