Stockholm city offers tepid consent to having 2026 Olympics

Today, Sweden's Olympic Committee filed its bid to host the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Stockholm, despite the city's reluctance to back the campaign.

Back in October, the capital's centre-right and Green coalition said it would not support the bid citing concerns about the costs.

But now, the city's politicians said Stockholm's arenas and public spaces will be open to the games as long as the taxpayers are not asked to foot the bill.

"Stockholm will not allocate any financial or personnel resources, or otherwise shoulder any formal responsibility for hosting or arranging the Winter Games, if they were to be held in Sweden in 2026," the coalition members wrote in a press release.

Friday marked the deadline for candidates to submit their final proposals for hosting the games to the International Olympic Committee.
