The Left party will not campaign for Sweden to leave the European Union in the run up to the bloc's parliamentary election in May.

After several hours of intense debate, proposals to include a demand that Sweden leaves the EU in the party's election platform were voted down by 41-30 on Sunday.

This is what the leadership of the party wanted and party leader Jonas Sjöstedt is pleased.

In an interview with Swedish Television's Agenda news programme, Sjöstedt said there are some urgent issues that need tackling at the EU level, such as climate change and the rise of right-wing parties in Europe.
