Government proposes new crime-fighting ambassador in foreign policy address

The government says it'll appoint a new ambassador charged with coordinating the crime fighting efforts by the Foreign Affairs Ministry and Swedish law enforcement abroad.

The announcement came during the annual declaration of foreign policy given for the first time this year by new Foreign Affairs Minister Ann Linde.

Addressing Swedish parliament on Wednesday, Linde said the ambassador would be tasked with coordinating work against organized crime and that Swedish embassies - especially those in the Western Balkans, the South Caucasus and central and south America - will also monitor crime that can be linked back to Sweden.

Public safety has become a hot button issue in the Swedish political debate with the opposition accusing the government of being too soft or slow to react to a recent rise in shooting and bombings.
