The EU-wide agency the ECDC, which is based just outside of Stockholm, was born out of a previous global virus outbreak, SARS, 17 years ago.
Its role is to support the health authorities in member states to deal with the threat from infectious diseases, while it is the EU-countries that does the work themselves.
So how prepared is the EU and Sweden for the Corona virus, and how concerned should people really be?
We spoke to Andrea Ammon, director of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, and Johan Carlsson, director general for the Swedish Public Health Agency, Folkhälsomyndigheten.
