Spike in Swedes getting UK citizenship after Brexit referendum

There has been a five-fold increase in the number of Swedes gaining British citizenship since the 2016 EU referendum in the UK, new figures from the UK Home Office show.

A total of 1,848 Swedes have become British citizens since 2016, compared to 360 in the three years running up to the referendum, with 781 becoming naturalised in 2019 alone.

The spike in figures comes despite the fact that a citizenship application involves paying almost SEK 17,000 as well as taking compulsory language and citizenship tests.

For Eva Jonsson, who has lived in London for more than 20 years, it was worth both the time, effort and money to become a full citizen as it allows her to take part in elections, she says.

For me there was no option. I knew I wanted to vote and I think it was an investment in my future to spend that money."
