Beck author Maj Sjöwall has died

The creator of Sweden's most famous fictional detective has died. Maj Sjöwall passed away on Tuesday after a long illness, reports news agency TT. She was 84.

Together with her life partner Per Wahlöö she wrote the Beck novels that started the modern Swedish detective genre. The books were written between 1965 and 1975 and have been translated into 40 languages and made into many films.

Radio Sweden's Gaby Katz spoke to Maj Sjöwall in 2006 and asked her about why she and Per Wahlöö had decided to write these books.
