Deadliest June for drownings in decades

June 2020 was a bad month for the number of drownings on Sweden's coasts and lakes. Sweden's Life Saving Society says a combination of the heat and crowded beaches are the main reasons behind the deadliest June for drownings in two decades.

According to the Swedish Life Saving Society's preliminary figures, 23 people drowned in Sweden in June, which is the highest number since the turn of the millennium. Last year, ten people drowned during the same period.

It was like the high season started much earlier this spring. We think it's because there are more people at home, more who are working from home, and some who are laid off who come out when the weather is nice"
