Government looks to ease 50-person limit for certain public events

The government is proposing to let cultural and sporting events attract crowds beyond the 50-person limit starting in October, if all audience members remain seated with 2 metres between each individual.

Minister for Culture Amanda Lind and Home Affairs Minister Mikael Damberg discussed the proposal at a press conference Friday morning.

Lind added that the Social Democrats and the Green Party had also approved an additional SEK 2.5 billion in support to the cultural and sports sector, and were waiting for the Centre Party and Liberal Party to give their backing on the package.

Sweden set its 50-person limit in March to slow the spread of the coronavirus, but the ceiling stopped venues like theaters, stadiums and concert halls from being able to bring in enough money to remain open.
