What happens if you lose your work permit but can't return home

As the pandemic drags down Sweden's economy many are losing their jobs, and this is especially hard for those who depend on their work for their permission to live in Sweden.

Rafiq Islam, chair of the Work Permit Holders Association, says many of their members can't work in the crowded conditions of restaurants and bars and that means after three months they will need to go back to their countries of origin.

Newspaper Arbetet estimates there are 7,500 people whose work permits will expire at the end of August.

But what if it is hard to return because your home country is sealed because of coronavirus restrictions, or has cancelled international flights? To understand what happens in such circumstances Radio Swede spoke to the head of press at the Migration Agency, Fredrik Söderberg Bruce.
