Swedish giants IFK Göteborg, who are hovering above the relegation zone after struggling in Allsvenskan, have named former player Roland Nilsson as their new head coach.

The Gothenburg club removed their last coach Poya Asbaghi on September third as despite winning the Swedish Cup this summer he was unable to turn their dismal league form around.

Now Nilsson steps in, leaving his job as Sweden U21s boss in the process. A former player who won the UEFA Cup and several leagues with Göteborg in the 1980s, he also coached their Allsvenskan rivals Malmö FF to a league title in 2010.
