Sweden to lift national ban on elderly home visits

Starting October 1, indoor visits will once again be allowed at Sweden's elderly care homes after the government banned them back in April to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

Health Minister Lena Hallengren said the country is in a better place now than where it was back in the spring. The lower number of daily Covid-19 infections and protective measures since take by care homes mean family and friends can now visit the elderly.

Both in Sweden and around the world, the elderly were disproportionately hit by coronavirus with many of them falling severely ill or dying.

Hallengren and other health officials said on Tuesday that localized bans on home visits could be used if new outbreaks occur in the state-funded homes.
