Swedish battery waste illegally exported to Poland

Swedish Radio can reveal how thousands of tonnes of dangerous battery waste has been illegally exported to countries like Poland and Bulgaria for several years.

The waste comes from recycled Swedish alkaline batteries and consists of toxic heavy metals. Some has been sent to a zinc works in Poland, where a third of the waste has been recycled, but the rest has been used for building roads and house foundations in Poland, despite the substance being dangerous for plants, humans, and other animals

The Environmental Protection Agency confirms to Swedish Radio's investigative programme Kaliber that what has been done by this company breaks the law.
