New groups turn to charity for help during pandemic

The Corona pandemic has pushed more people into poverty and increased the difficulties for people who are already in vulnerable positions, according to the charity City Mission, or Stadsmissionen in Swedish.

Several of the groups that now turn to the charity are new, it says. That can be people who have lost their jobs, or families with children whose education during the spring took place online, meaning they missed out on school lunch.

In a new report, the City Mission talks about a kind of poverty in Sweden that is not visible in the general statistics, and where more and more responsibility has been pushed from the general welfare system to different charities.

A lot of the politicians think that Sweden is a country where people don't live in poverty and that we have sufficiently good systems that people don't have to live in poverty. But we have people in Sweden who live in extreme poverty,"
