Demand grows for paper bags after tax on plastic ones took effect

Swedish shoppers have been reaching for paper bags more and more ever since the country introduced a tax on plastic ones back in May. And that's good news for the companies that manufacture them.

At Norbag, a paper bag and packaging company in western Sweden, its plant is running on three shifts a day. And the workforce there has doubled in the last year and a half with 66 people employed.

According to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, Swedes used an average of 74 plastic carrier bags last year and 75 very thin plastic bags, used to pack things like as fruit and vegetables in supermarkets.

EU member states have agreed to reduce their use of plastic bags to a maximum of 40 bags per year, per EU citizens by 2025.
