Aceh Mission Extended

The Swedish government has approved the extension of support for the European Union’s peacekeeping mission in Aceh.

Eight Swedish observers are among the 300 EU monitors ensuring that the Free Aceh Movement and the Indonesian government comply with the peace agreement signed in Finland last year.

The mission’s mandate has now been extended until September, because of the delay in the scheduling of the upcoming local elections.

A team from the Swedish Rescue Services will also remain in Aceh to provide logistical and communications support for the EU mission.
