Bans on Swedish meat imports following swine fever outbreak
Countries including South Korea, Japan, Australia, and the Phillipines have halted imports of Swedish pork following the recent discovery of African swine fever. 7 dead wild boars have now been confirmed infected.
The disease has not yet been detected in any domestically reared pigs, but farmers and representatives from the Swedish meat industry are very concerned about the potential impact. The virus does not affect humans but is highly contagious to other pigs and boars.
The halt to imports is not a suprise, says Isabel Moretti, CEO of Swedish Meat, an interest organisation owned by several groups in the industry representing farmers and producers.
