Government: transport companies must demand valid passports from refugees

  • The Swedish government wants reintroduce legislation to be able to fine transport companies, such as train operators, ferries and airlines, that allow passengers on board without valid passports.

  • This is however at odds with a recommendation by the EU to make it easier for refugees from Ukraine to travel freely in the union.

  • "It is not impossible for Ukrainian citizens to get a new passport in any of the embassies or consulates in the countries they have gotten to first," says Home Affairs Minister Anders Ygeman.
