Overcrowded jails and prisons forecast to be a problem for years to come
- Never before have so many inmates had to share a cell with one another, according to the Swedish authorities, with close to 1600 prisoners currently sharing cells.
- It's a situation that officials warn can lead to an increased risk for arguments and conflicts among inmates and staff.
- Martin Holmgren, director general of the Swedish Prison and Probation Service, is aware of the issue but says overcrowding and sharing cells will likely be a problem over the next four years.
