Protected smooth newt halts planned school in Falköping - but there might be a solution

  • A small amphibian has forced the municipality of Falköping to pause its largest investment ever, building a new high school that was meant to cater for 1110 new students.

  • The smooth newt was found on the planned building site, and because it is a protected species in Sweden, it could have put an end to the building plans.

  • But according to Martin Svensson, a local biologist at the county adminstrative board in the area, there might be a solution in sight, as the municipality now wants permission to move the newt to another pond, outside of town.
