MARITIME ACCIDENT

Sea captain: Crew need to be on constant alert

  • Joel Smith, the director of infrastructure at the Swedish Maritime Administration, tells Radio Sweden that despite the hundreds of cargo ships that pass the busy stretch of the Baltic Sea near Bornholm every day, it's rare for an accident to occur.

  • However, the expert, who is also a sea captain, says crew members need to keep a constant watch while on the bridge and to slow down if there is fog.

  • "You have to maintain a speed where you can stop in an adequate distance and you must look at your radar even more closely," he says.
