Thousands of eel fry released in effort to save remaining population
Some 70,000 eel fry were released into the Stångån river in Linköping on Tuesday.
Jakob Bergengren, environmental engineer at the municipally owned company Tekniska verken, says that eels have existed for millions of years, but about 95% of the European eel stock is gone.
"We're doing everything we can to save the last 5% and get the population to grow," he says.
