Fewer people training to be teachers, despite major shortage

Teacher-training courses have been trying hard to attract more students, but despite this, the number of people studying to become teachers dropped this autumn, to just under 14,000 people.

The Council for Higher Education estimates that Sweden needs as many as 23,700 new teaching students every year.

Moreover, the Council found that about half of Sweden's teacher training courses did not have any reserve applicants, meaning all qualified applicants entered without competition.
