Party Secretary Per Schlingmann at the conference

Conservative Moderate Party Conference Opens

Sweden’s conservative Moderates opened their party conference on Thursday, in Gävle, north of Stockholm.

This is their first conference since last year’s elections, when party leader Fredrik Reinfeldt took over as Sweden’s prime minister, and the party took half the portfolios in the new cabinet.

Swedish Radio News says the conference marks the triumph of the so-called “New Moderates” who have moved the party towards the center.

Former party secretary Sven Otto Littorin, now Labor Market Minister, has been sharply criticised from business groups for policies they say are too similar to those of the previous Social Democratic government.
