Swedish Helsinki Committee Defends Russian Gays

As Europride continues this week here in the Swedish capital – focusing on the visibility and human rights of lesbians, gays, trans persons and bi-sexuals in all of Europe, the Swedish Helsinki Human Rights Committee has turned a new spotlight on the situation for LGBT people in Russia and the former Soviet Union – areas where homosexuality may be legal today but where prejudice and discrimination  continues in the shadow of yesterday’s Stalinistic laws putting gay men in prison for 5 years.
