More Somalis Seeking Asylum

Refugees from war-torn Somalia have now overtaken Iraqis as the largest group of asylum seekers in Sweden. Over the past 12 months over 3400 refugees from Somalia have applied, and almost 70 percent of them have been given asylum here.

And that percentage could be about to rise, as the Swedish Migration Board has changed its rules for refugees from Somalia making it easier for them to stay here.

The board says that there are fewer chances for refugees to move inside Somalia to get away from the conflicts in the country. This is because it is getting more difficult for their clans to look after them, the board says, meaning more Somalis are having to flee abroad for safety, including to Sweden.
