Robert Adams Wins 2009 Hasselblad Award

American photographer Robert Adams has won 2009 Hasselblad Award for his modernist documentation of the American West.

Adams received the 60,000 dollar diploma and gold medal prize at a joint news conference and awards ceremony in San Francisco on Tuesday.

It was staged ahead of schedule and moved from its traditional Swedish venue because the 71-year-old Adams does not travel because of his health. In its citation, the jury says that Adams is ”one of the most important and influential photographers of the last 40 years”. They praised especially his ability to document the impact of human activity on the landscape.

Robert Adams has already won numerous awards for his work.
