Suspected CIA Plane leaving Spain

According to the Swedish tabloid newspaper Expressen, the previous government was aware that the American intelligence agency CIA used Sweden as a transit country when transporting suspected terrorists.

The paper claims that the former government, headed by then Prime Minister and leader of the Social Democratic Party, Göran Persson, knew of at least one transport of prisoners from the US in 2005.

According to Expressen, the Ministry of Defence gave the order to have the plane searched, information that has later been confirmed by the Swedish military.  Expressen claims that the aim of the search was to find out if prisoners were taken from the US against their will. A source tells Expressen that the prisoners on the plane were found to be unable to move with their faces covered by hoods.

In 2006, after a quick investigation into the matter, the former Foreign Minister Laila Freiwalds denied any knowledge of CIA activity in Sweden , according to Swedish news agency TT.

The former Prime Minister Göran Persson has chosen not to comment on Expressen’s claims at present. (rm)
