Calm Walpurgis Eve in Much of Sweden

Swedish police report a relatively calm April 30th Walpurgis Eve celebrations throughout the nation - although there were some cases of alcohol-drenched fights, drunken teenagers escorted back home and some rapes.

The lower level of violence is credited to the fact that many of the traditional bonfires were banned in southern Sweden this year because of the dry conditions, so many of the out-door get-togethers did not attract the usual crowds.

In one small town, a bonfire got out of control and burned down the log-cobin farm house used as a community center. In another town, a box of fireworks tipped over and stating shooting at the crowd but no one was injured.
