Law to Prevent Child Abuse

Adults who contact children on the Internet in order to sexually abuse them might face a prison sentence of up to one year. Sweden’s parliament has passed a bill that criminalizes Internet contacts with children under 15 for sexual reasons.

According to the law, prosecutors will in future have to prove that an adult actively tried to arrange a meeting with the child. The new law is meant to increase protection of children in Sweden, where in the past several cases of sexual abuse by adult Internet acquaintances have been reported. (ah)
